The Freshest look on the NBA Bubble
This past Sunday the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Miami heat. This was the Laker’s 17th championship in their franchise history. This was not a regular finals win; this win will be remembered throughout NBA history. On March 11, 2020, the NBA was put on pause when players started testing positive For COVID-19. This was a tragedy in the NBA because the Lakers were having a great season having two-star players and many vets on the team.
The NBA wanted to bring basketball back but had to wait because of the virus. Adam Silver's idea to bring the NBA back was called The Bubble. Desert News says “Essentially, every team, player, coach, and staffer would be isolated at a specific neutral location. Games would be played at the location and players would live there and stay isolated from the rest of the population until the decided stretch of games was completed." The NBA created this to prevent players from receiving and transmitting COVID to one another so they could continue their season. On July 22, the NBA had their first games in Orlando where the teams that were the closest to making the playoffs and staff stayed to continue the season.
Many people thought the NBA bubble was a huge success. This is because it allows players to be away from the general population of people, in a safe environment. No one could come in and no one could leave which then prevented people from spreading the virus or contracting it. When interviewing people in the Chicago area; one teenager stated, “I think that the NBA Bubble did work out better than most people expected; especially the inclusion of fans through virtual seats to the games.” Many people also don't think this ring should count for LeBron James and the Lakers but many people do as well. When asking around, another teenager told me ”I absolutely believe this championship should count for LeBron because he worked hard recruiting Anthony Davis and many other players from the Lakers. He also promised the Lakers that he will win the championship. And he came through to the end by working hard every game and playing like the beast he naturally is."
One Chicago teen says “I think the NBA Season should start in February to represent an acknowledgment of black people in this country and the changes that need to be made in this country’s constitution and judicial system for people of color.” Starting the NBA back up in February would be a really good way to appeal to the black community more than it already has. It would also be a strong way to make a statement that they are in support of the leading activist organization, Black Lives Matter.
