A Piece of The Puzzle
For my last Action Project in one of the most interesting classes I’ve taken at my school called econ, we had to create an eighth chapter or what would have been the eighth chapter to Kate Raworth’s “Doughnut Economics”. Before doing this we read the first two chapters of the book then our class split into five groups to read and present a chapter. After hearing about everyone’s chapters we made our own. In my eighth chapter, I talk about working and retirement because I am very interested in what I am going to do in my years after high school.
People do not want to work at a place they are not enjoying and happy. Unhappiness leads to people leaving their jobs to work somewhere they would want to stay and retire.It’s just like a puzzle. The puzzle isn’t complete until you have the pieces in the right place. It wouldn’t make sense to put puzzle pieces in the wrong place, because even if you cram the pieces together, the picture doesn’t come outright.If we find a piece that doesn’t fit anywhere in the puzzle, we don’t get rid of that puzzle piece. We find out where that puzzle piece belongs because it belongs somewhere.
In life, this would look like a company hiring someone to work as a salesman but they realize when working that they are not the best at sales. Just like the puzzle piece that doesn’t belong, the company must find the right place for the salesman, to create a complete and whole picture. Today, if a worker is not fit for their position the company fires them but the company should not fire, but help find a better fit inside their company so they can thrive at another position and retire with the company they started with.

In the 21st century, people retire after being at their jobs for a couple of years which increased since the late 1900s but, the difference is after retirement they would receive a pension. Now pensions are not that common. You can find there retirement plans for government organizations even though, you see the years that people work at one place increase. “According to research from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employees today stay longer with a company than they did 25 years ago. In 1983, the average employee tenure was around 3.5 years. Fifteen years later, in 1998, people stayed on the job an average of 3.6 years before leaving. In 2014, the average employee stayed 4.6 years.” Forbes states in 2016.
People that work in the 21st century are staying at a job for a good amount of time but then find themselves not happy where they are at. They then look for the right place and this is why pensions are not as common as they use to be in the 20th century. Instead of quitting the job they have because they don’t like it or it's not the right fit, they can try to find a better position in the same company. If this can happen people can find a better fit for them to thrive and they can receive the same benefits as people that stay in one job for their whole life and can bring pensions back for the employees.
The average age to retire has lowed since the early 1900s. SeniorLiving.com said “In 1910, life expectancy at birth was only 50 years. Retirement was only for the very old, and the average age of retirement from the workforce was 74 years.” Now that our life expectancy has increased our age to retire has lowered to 60 which means pensions and having the right investments for after retirement can help a lot today due to having so much time after retirement.
Kate Raworth said in her Ted talk, “It’s time to think again, To reimagine the shape of progress because today we have economies that need to grow whether or not they make us thrive and what we need especially in the richest countries are economies that make us thrive whether or not they grow. yes is a little Flippin word hiding a profound shift in mindset but I believe this is the shift we need to make if we, humanity, are going to thrive here this century.” People quitting jobs and letting their wants drive their decisions and not their needs is not helpful to them because then they have to go out and start all over again in life. My biggest takeaway from the quote is when she said “It’s time to think again, To reimagine the shape of progress”. I like this part of the quote because she's saying to think outside the box and change was happening.
