Changing School Policies

For the second unit of "A Nations Argument" We focused on argument and how people in history used and uses it. We watched many democratic debates to see how they use argument. In class, we watched the movie "13th" and it talked about inequalities in America and focuses on prisons and how people of color, but mostly black people being targetted. We Also looked at documents like the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, And the Bill of Rights including the amendments. For this Action Project, we had to pick a rule in our school's student handbook and amend it. I amended where we can eat in the school because I disagree with what the student handbook says. You can find my second Action Project for "A Nations Argument" down below.

The schools rule

Eating is allowed in the Cafe and Open Concept room downstairs before school, during lunch, after school, and during breaks. After eating, students must wipe down tables. Refusal to clean up can result in disciplinary action. Food and drink during class time is at the discretion of the instructor and may change depending on daily activities. An approved drink container can be turned upside-down over your personal computer without leaking. 

Unjust

I think this rule is unjust because people should be able to eat upstairs and places where there is no carpet. Some people need to study or finish their homework and don't want to do that where there’s a lot of people. People like me don’t want a loud space to eat and work. 

Consequences

-People that do something wrong in school like act up or use their phone in class can't go upstairs to eat

-If you didn’t clean up your space you cant eat upstairs the next day

Historical

A historical document that I found is similar by different to my Amendment is The declaration of Independence. The declaration of independence says how people have rights that can not be taken away. Its a list of complaints why they (America) should be independent. It also talks about why they should break away. This relates to my amendment because I say why I should be able to go upstairs and be independent and not be with the community all the time. I also have the rights that can’t be taken away like Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

syllogism (Old Amendment)

P-No one can eat upstairs

P-No one can eat in carpeted areas

P-Everyone must clean their dishes and spots down

C- Everyone must eat in the OC or Cafe to keep the school clean 

Apply

This rule should not apply when people want to get work done and eat in a quiet place.

Syllogism(New Amendment)

P- a teacher checking the rooms at the end of lunch

P-A monitor must go in all the rooms

P- People must clean up the room they ate in 

C- People can eat anywhere in the school without carpet

Analogy

There was once a cow who couldn’t eat his grass because the flies would not stop buzzing around his head and tail. He was getting skinnier and skinnier day by day because the flies were distracting him. Eventually, the farmers noticed the issue and cleaned the cow daily. They also watched over him so he could eat his grass. Ever since they cleaned and watched over he has been able to enjoy his grass in peace and quiet.

Life with my amendment

If my amendment was emplaced life at school would change by people getting better grades. I feel like if I could eat upstairs I would get a lot more work done and have a better grade in each class.

Amendment 5

My Amendment relates mostly to the 5th Amendment which is “No person shall be held to answer for a capital or otherwise infamous crime unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation.” This amendment is about the Protection of Rights to Life, Liberty, and Property. This relates to my amendment because people have the right to liberty which is freedom. I believe we have the freedom to eat anywhere in the school without carpet. 

Demonstrate true citizenship

My amendment demonstrates true citizenship because people that do work are sacrificing there free time to get work done while they eat. They’re also going out of there way to move to another room so people don’t have to be quiet.

I will be changing this rule because...

1.  Everyone is very loud at lunch
2. Its lunch so you can do what you want and shouldn’t be held in one space
3.  Getting work done is hard with surrounding noise
