Changing the Rent and Mortgage
For my first unit for Policy, our Action Project in this quarantine was to create a letter. We had to write to someone that represented us at any level of government; State, city, etc. This letter had to be a bill that was going to be pass or not so I picked Cancelation of rent and mortgage. I wrote to my representative in the 14th district to tell her what I think about this cancelation by using logos, ethos, and pathos to sell my opinion. While writing this letter while being in quarantine I realized that writing is not as hard as I thought it is. Even though it takes a long time for my thoughts to come out it feels easier than when I wrote when I was back in school. Not being in school still gives me a lot of work to do but helps me find out what I'm good at and what I'm not.
Dear Kelly M. Cassidy,
Can we convince American people that in this time, when many people don't have enough money for their needs, that they should not have to pay rent or mortgage? The rent and mortgage act would alleviate the final burden of people who are struggling to pay for basic necessities during the COVID 19 pandemic.
The problem that Americans are facing is that many people have lost their jobs due to COVID 19. CNN states that “American workers filed 26.5 million initial claims since March 14, according to the seasonally adjusted numbers”. If many Americans don’t have jobs then how will they be able to pay for things. NBC states "When the national nonprofit Feeding America surveyed its affiliated food banks in mid-March, 92 percent said they were seeing an increased need, while 64 percent said food donations had declined". This means that many more people are going to food banks due to not having enough money to pay for food. Many Americans are withdrawing money from their 401(k), 403(b), IRA, and other retirement accounts. As part of the COVID 19 stimulus package, Congress lifted 10% penalties for early retirement withdrawals. In my opinion, this is a bad idea because when it comes time for people to retire they will not have money in their retirement accounts and will have to work until an older age.
My father has lost several contracted jobs due to COVID 19, so I can relate to this situation. I feel strongly about this bill and understand how helpful suspending rent and mortgage can be to Americans during this time. As I watch the news, I see people standing in long food lines, waiting for food in the rain or the cold with kids or babies. These people put themselves at risk by being in close proximity to other people, but it's a risk they have to take because they have no other choice, due to having to pay for other basic necessities, like their mortgage and rent instead of food.
I am aware that groups of people that might be opposed to my position on the proposed legislation are apartment owners, whose only source of income right now comes from the people paying the rent of the apartment they own. Although it's not fair to them either, even those people have to pay for rent or mortgage. What I'm addressing is that those who have lost their jobs and sources of income due to COVID-19, who can't afford to pay for their basic needs, should not have to pay their rent and mortgage. Alleviating rent and mortgage payments until the end of summer 2020 will give people time to find jobs and become more financially stable. Thank you for you’re time and for listening to my concerns.
Sincerely,
Paolo Aguilar
